Teresa Schurger

Teresa Rose Schurger died peacefully at home Sunday, October 31, 2021, going to be with her Lord at the age of 77 years old. She was born February 12, 1944, to Joseph and Emily Setele of Cleveland, Ohio. She was married October 7, 1972, to Frederick A. Schurger. They had over 49 happy years together.
She graduated from Notre Dame College in Cleveland and received her master’s in education at Indiana University. She taught office education in Cleveland before her marriage, briefly at Bellmont High School in Decatur, followed by many years raising her children. She was very active in lead volunteer roles such as PTO and activities her kids were in at the time – too many to name. She then worked temporarily for St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church Decatur as director of religious education, which turned into a permanent role she loved for 11 years.
She is survived by her husband; five sons, Frederick T. (Jeanne) Schurger of Springfield, Illinois; Vincent (Beth) Schurger of Greenfield; David (Liz) Schurger of Indianapolis; Joseph Severin (Julia) Schurger of Portland, Oregon; and James Schurger of Decatur; daughter, Terese Marie (Thomas) McAninch of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Gabriel, Samuel and Evelyn Schurger; and Liam, Lucille and Declan McAninch; brother, Joseph Setele; and sister, Jean Setele of Cleveland, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 4 from 3-6 p.m. at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour before the 10 a.m. Mass Friday, November 5 at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. A Rosary will be said at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur. Officiating will be Father David Ruppert. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Sunday school program or Heart to Heart Hospice.
