Lester W. Schwartz

Lester W. Schwartz, 82, well-known Berne businessman, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Swiss Village in Berne. He was born on October 20, 1934 in Adams County to Joel and Sarah (Nussbaum) Schwartz. He was married on April 25, 1953 to Sally Ross.

He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church-East in Bluffton, where he taught Sunday school and served as an usher. He owned Schwartz Marathon for 28 years and was affiliated with the filling station for over 60 years. He was active in the community as a Boy Scout leader and received the Silver Beaver Scouting Award. He was former president of the Berne Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Berne Swiss Days committee. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Scott (Patti) Schwartz of Berne; and Steve (Julie) Schwartz of Bluffton; daughter, Sue (Terry) Lehman of Berne; sister, Mildred Schladenhauffen of Bluffton; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Kenneth Schwartz; and sister, Luella Geisel.

Visitation will be from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service on Friday, April 7 at the Apostolic Christian Church-East in Bluffton. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
