Leroy Sprunger

Leroy K. Sprunger, 92, of Berne passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, at Swiss Village in Berne. He was born May 25, 1930, in Berne to Emil and Mathilda (Hirschy) Sprunger. He was married June 25, 1961, in Van Orin, Illinois to Carolyn J. Haas.
 A devoted husband and father, he was a lifelong member of First Missionary Church in Berne, where he served many years as youth leader, deacon and Sunday school teacher. In the 1950s, he was instrumental in bringing in Youth for Christ to the Berne area.
The youngest of 12 children, he grew up in Berne where he helped his family with chores and enjoyed sports, including high school basketball. In 1948, he graduated from Berne High School and began work at Berne Equity. In the 1950s, he joined the Indiana National Guard and was activated into Fort Wayne Unit 122nd P51’s Squadron. In 1952, he began his 38-year career with the U.S. Postal Service serving as a mail carrier and later as postmaster.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and worked part-time with Habegger Ace Hardware and volunteered with Lutheran Hospital System working in its mail department. He loved spending time with people and enjoyed helping others.
He is survived by his wife of Berne; son, Doug Sprunger of Arlington, Virginia; Rosetta (Paul) J. Yoder of Berne; four grandchildren, Brianna (Kit) Phoon; Zachary (Camille) Yoder; Tiffany (Ben) DeVoe; and Marissa Yoder; two great-grandchildren, Winry Phoon; and Cade Yoder; and a sister Miriam I. Sprunger of Berne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Norman, Raymond, Melvin, Timothy, Eli and Clifford; and four sisters, Minnie Basinger; Edith Minger; Esther Biberstein; and Inez Patterson.
There will be a visitation Thursday, Feb. 2 from 2-3 p.m. at the Swiss Village Chapel for residents of Swiss Village. Visitation will also be Thursday, Feb. 2 from 4-8 p.m. at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Yager-Kirchhofer Chapel in Berne and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Friday, Feb. 3 at First Missionary Church in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor Rick Schwartz and Pastor Dathan Foust. Burial will be at MRE Cemetery in Berne.
