Lawrence James Neuen, 84, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at Valley Rehab and Nursing Center in Taylorsville, North Carolina, where he had been a patient for the past five years. He died peacefully after approximately 24 hours in a coma. The year of residence in the nursing center was necessitated due to the advanced illness of Parkinson’s disease and serious complications due to Agent Orange, which was contracted during his two deployments in the Vietnam War. During that war, he was awarded four Bronze Stars for heroic duty in the line of battle. He also served in the Korean War.
He was the son of Lee and Erma Neuen and graduated from Berne-French High School in 1955. This was followed by his career in the United States Army. Following that, he relocated to Newton, North Carolina and had a career in restaurant management. In his retirement, he worked for several years with the Catawba County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office as a volunteer calling aged people in the area who lived alone to meet needs they might have and make sure they were well. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge of Newton.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Neuen; daughter, Shirley Frankhauser; three sons, Larry Lee Neuen; L.J. Neuen; and Paul Russell Neuen; sister, Lois Bondesen; and brother, Don Neuen.
His military funeral was held Monday, December 30 in Newton.
