Joan Wendel

Joan J. (Ellsworth) Wendel, 89, of Monroe passed away at 6:38 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Christian Care Retirement Community in Bluffton.  She was born Friday, September 28, 1934, in Portland to Robert “Bob” and Wilma (Roser) Ellsworth. She married Jack W. Wendel on Sunday, July 6, 1952 in Portland.
She was a 1952 graduate of Portland High School. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bryant and had worked at CTS, Ft. Recovery Industries and EP Graphics. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and loved attending family sporting events and spending time with her family. She traveled to Taiwan with her husband while he was working for CTS. While living in Taiwan, she taught conversational English at the Taiwanese Naval Academy. Her students won many awards at competitions. She made many friends, some who continued to visit Indiana and many who stayed in contact.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald A. (Joyce) Wendel of The Villages, Florida; and Donald “Donnie” (Beth) Wendel of Monroe; son-in-law, Dan Mosier of Willshire, OH; grandchildren, Quentin Berry of Sturgis, Michigan; Miranda Berry of Monroe; Christopher Wendel of Delaware; Kimberlee Wendel of West Chester, Pennsylvania; and Shawn Wendel of Carmel; brother, Thomas “Tom” (Sharon) Ellsworth of Portland; and sister, Audrey Rudduck of Westerville, Ohio; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on December 19, 2022; daughter, Sharyl Mosier; son, Stevie J. Wendel; sister, Linda Ellsworth; and brother, Larry Ellsworth; and brother-in-law, Roger Rudduck.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, 100 N. Washington, St., Geneva. Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 at the funeral home with Rev. Dan Layden officiating.
