Joan Liechty

Joan A. Liechty, 93, of Berne went to be with her Heavenly Father Wednesday, November 17, 2021. She was born November 25, 1927, in Kirkland Township, Adams County to Victor and Alta (Barger) Byerly. She married January 2, 1949, to Loren Liechty. She was a member of Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren from youth-1972. Since 1972, she was a member of First Missionary Church in Berne. She was a member of the Friendly Bible Sunday school class as well as a Sunday school teacher and nursery worker for many years. Before marriage, she worked at the Craigville Telephone Company as a telephone operator for her grandfather, John Barger, who founded the phone company. She also worked in the office of General Electric in Decatur. She was a homemaker and a cook for 30 years at South Adams School.
She was a supportive wife and loving mother. She was an avid reader and loved to travel and wintered in Mesa, Arizona for a number of years. She loved to cook and bake, especially her family-favorite, cut-out Christmas cookies.  
She is survived by her husband of Berne; three sons, Terry Liechty of Decatur; and Gary (Betty) Liechty; and William “Bill” (Margaret) Liechty, both of Berne; daughter, Penelope “Penny” (Steve) Haines of Berne; sister, Barbara Nussbaum of Berne; brother, Wayne Byerly of Decatur; seven grandchildren, Ben (Rebeccah) Liechty; Luke (Amy) Liechty; Tammy (Nathan) Meyer; Jason (Maggie) Liechty; James (Lauren) Liechty; Nichole (Nikki Haines) Summersett; and Justin (Carson) Haines; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ronald Byerly; two sisters, Delores Landis; and Marjorie Byerly; and granddaughter, Nichole “Nikki” Summersett.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 21 from 1-5 p.m. and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Monday, November 22 at First Missionary Church, 950 U.S. 27, Berne. Officiating will be Pastor Michael Wenger and Pastor Rick Schwartz. Burial will be at M.R.E. Cemetery.
