Imogene L. James

Imogene L. James, 100, of Anderson passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Worthington Place in Camby. She was born on October 1, 1918 in Marion County, Ohio to Clyde E. and Lottie (James) Cole. She was married to Robert James.

She and her husband retired to Anderson in 1986 after 67 years of ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. Her life has always been one of service. Though her husband was the pastor, she worked right beside him directing nearly 67 years of Vacation Bible School, summer church camp for 25 years, and teaching countless years of Sunday school classes.

In retirement, she still filled her life with service. For many years, she created large Raggedy Ann and Andy sets with beautifully crafted clothing and fine details. She loved to share the love of the dolls, and all proceeds were donated to various missions she held dear to her heart. Along the way, she and her husband began collecting Bibles. They inspired many people to help them collect. She spent countless hours repairing and boxing these Bibles, which made their way to Africa via a Fort Wayne mission, Christian Literature for Africa. She and her husband went to all the local church sales looking for Bibles and were remembered fondly as “the Bible couple.”

In the midst of all this activity, they directed the Nazarene district’s retirement service group. Through this group, she participated in work projects both national and international.

She is survived by her son, Thomas James of Indianapolis; two daughters, Nancy (Don) Ault of Caro, Michigan; and Ruth (Frank) Brown of Mooresville; and daughter-in-law, Carol James. She was happily the grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of 14, and great-great-grandmother of four.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 77 years.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the 11:30 a.m. funeral services on Friday, November 16 at Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory in Anderson. Officiating will be Jack Duckworth and Bill Babb. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Christian Literature for Africa, P.O. Box 5524, Ft. Wayne, IN 46895.
