Darrol Smitley

Darrol C. Smitley, 91, of Berne passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at 5:15 a.m. at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur. He was born Friday, October 19, 1928, in Wells County to Ralph and Alta (Yaney) Smitley. He was married Saturday, May 1, 1948, in Berne to Phyllis J. Garboden.
He was a graduate of Bedford Academy in Bedford, Virginia and was a graduate of the Fort Wayne Police Academy. He also attended Jefferson High School. He spent 22 years in law enforcement and was the town marshall in Geneva. He was the head custodian at South Adams Schools for 12 years. He was a collector of many things and was always known for being a people person.
He is survived by his son, Rodney (Armetta) Smitley of Saint Louis, Missouri; daughter, Carol A. (Gerald) Tonak of Berne; son-in-law, David Miller of Geneva; sister, Margie Andrews of Berne; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Janice Miller; four sisters; and four brothers.  
Private viewing for family only will be held Friday, July 24 at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery.
