Beatrice I. Schmit

Beatrice I. Schmit, 101, of Berne passed away at 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton. She was born on Sunday, January 7, 1917 in Jay County to Peter and Veronica (Klaus) Eischen. She was married on December 12, 1939 in Fort Wayne to Gilbert P. Schmit.

She attended Gibson School in Jay County. She was a member of the St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church in Geneva and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed her flower gardens, sewing for the Geneva Police Department, and helping anyone in need. She will be greatly missed by her family.

She is survived by her son, Ralph (Rita) Schmit of Celina, Ohio; three daughters, Alice Minch of Bryant; Martha (Wayne) Bollenbacher of Celina, Ohio; and Regina (Carolyn) Schmit of Chula Vista, California; son-in-law, Paul Minnich of Portland; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 7, 1994; son, Richard Schmit; daughter, Ruth Minnich; daughter-in-law, Donna Schmit; son-in-law, David Minch; five brothers, John Eischen; Joseph Eischen; Edward Eischen; Arthur Eischen; and Sylvester Eischen; and six sisters, Elizabeth Homan; Mary Koenig; Matilda Schwoerer; Cecilia Eischen; Catherine Hartnagel; and Vita Weitzel.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1 at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, 100 N. Washington St., Geneva with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 2 at the funeral home followed by 11:00 a.m. funeral services at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church, 5970E 1100S, Geneva. Officiating will be Father J. Bosco Perera. Burial will be at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church Cemetery.
