Rose Liechty

Rose Marie Liechty, 96, of Berne passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, at her residence. She was born Dec. 5, 1927, at the Martha Hussman Home in Berne to Daisy (Moeschberger) and Henry Aschleman. She was married Sep. 4, 1948, at the Cross Evangelical and Reformed Church (Cross United Church of Christ) in Berne to Kenneth Liechty. They celebrated 63 years of marriage in September 2011 prior to his passing away.
As a lifelong member of the church, she was a member of the sanctuary choir and the ensemble while serving on various committees and volunteering. She and her mother enjoyed making their popular homemade groundcherrie pies for the annual church fundraiser.
Following graduation from Hartford High School in 1945, she continued working on the family farm. Her career included managing the Dunbar Furniture Company Warehouse Store on Main Street in Berne and 26 years selling with Yager Furniture. She thoroughly enjoyed working with her colleagues and customers.
She served as the vice chairwoman of the Adams County Democrats from 1980-1989. She also served four years on the Berne City Council.
She would often reflect on the many responsibilities and opportunities that growing up on the farm provided. She loved the farm, animals and the many skills learned from her parents. She learned how to raise Ayrshire cattle from her father. She worked with him each year in preparation for the local and state 4-H competition. He was well known for his Ayrshire cattle. Some of his cattle earned first prize at the annual Indiana State Fair, and she also had top three winners.
Throughout her life, she loved to plant and manage vegetable gardens and flower gardens. 2023 was the first year in her life that she did not have a vegetable garden. She used her many talents to make quilts for her family and grandchildren. She, her husband and their children enjoyed summer weekends with family and relatives at Oliver Lake, annual summer camping trips with neighbors, traveling to many of the states and being a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and baker who was at ease hosting close and new friends for meals and socializing. She cherished time with her five grandchildren as well as relatives in Michigan and Ohio.
Her faith and trust in God gave her the strength to navigate life’s challenges. Her joyful perspective and positive attitude were ever-present. As a “giver,” she easily made and had lifelong friendships. Living a life of gratitude and naturally caring for others, she had a listening ear, so she was able to help others. Serving God, her family and putting others first were her priorities.
She is survived by her son, Lyle Liechty and family, grandson, Kenny Walker, and granddaughter, Whitnie Walker and her son, Lexn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Beth Ann; sister, Phyllis; and brother, Robert (in infancy).
A private family burial will take place at MRE Cemetery in Berne, and a celebration of life service will be held at a future date in the spring of 2024.
Memorials may be made to Cross United Church of Christ or a foundation being formed for individuals pursuing agriculture. (For information, contact Lyle Liechty at lmliechty1@gmail.com).
