Ellamae Haessig


Ellamae Haessig, 80, of Syracuse passed away Friday, Sep. 29, 2023, at Waterford Crossing Healthcare. She was born March 13, 1943, to Richard and Rhoda M. (Jones) Speakman. She was married Aug. 21, 1965, at Union Chapel United Methodist Church to Roger G. Haessig.
She was a long time member of Mt. Hope Church of Nazarene in Berne, where she served the Lord as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, steward and missionary president. She recently was a member of the North Webster Church of God and was involved with the Ladies Bible Study there. She also conducted a Bible study at the nursing home.
She was a 1961 graduate of Pleasant Mills High School. She continued her education by receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 from Asbury College and a Master of Science degree in 1969 from St. Francis College. She was a special-education teacher for 27 years. She was employed by North Judson Schools and Parkway Schools and then went to Adams Wells Special Services Co-op (AWSS), where she worked for 22 years.
She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and had a desire for others to come to Jesus for salvation just like she did.
She is survived by her two sons, David M. (Kim) Haessig of Milford; and Daryl L. (Susan) Haessig of Syracuse; daughter, Karen (Sunu) Thomas of South Bend; brother, David (Carmi) Speakman of Syracuse; sister, Mary Sutherland of Willmore, Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Speakman of Decatur; and Judy Speakman of Warren; nine grandchildren, Lanae (Asher), Logan, Trevor, Brianna, Valerie, Samuel, Leena, Hannah and Silas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on April 7, 2014; six brothers, Thomas (Jennie) Speakman; Rev. Harry (Esther Jean) Speakman; John H. Speakman; Rev. Lee (Lavonne) Speakman; Robert “Bob” Speakman; and Paul (Em) Speakman; sister, Arlyene (Ron) Kelsey; and brother-in-law, Robert Sutherland.
Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 12 from 5-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Friday, Oct. 13 at Mt. Hope Church of the Nazarene in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor David Cox and Pastor Jeff Boyer. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Berne.
