Edward LaFontaine

Edward L. LaFontaine, 81, of Decatur passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur. He was born February 11, 1941, in Decatur to Herbert and Florence (Lengerich) LaFontaine. He was married August 11, 1962, to Judith A. Braun.
He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a 1959 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School. He worked for 47 years at Monroe Grain Elevator and served on the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.
He loved to talk and enjoyed calling his friends, and he and his wife were part of farmer’s table at Becky’s Restaurant in Willshire. As he was a farmer his entire life, his world revolved around planting and harvesting, and he would always be up for a crop tour.
He is survived by his wife of Decatur; son, Tony (Jean) LaFontaine of Decatur; two daughters, Deb (Todd) Hawkins; and Kathy LaFontaine, both of Decatur; three sisters, Ann (Jack) Grothaus of Landeck, Ohio; Ruth (Charlie) Ellis of Dubuque, Iowa; and Pat (Ken) Biberstein of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Stephanie Ramsey; Brandon (Ilissa) LaFontaine; Tyler (Molly) LaFontaine; Jessica (Braidon) Harris; and Ethan (Katie Mahlan) Hawkins; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John LaFontaine; and Paulie LaFontaine in infancy.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 2 from 4-7 p.m. at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home in Decatur with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will also be Thursday, November 3 at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s Parish Hall followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father David Ruppert. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, Heart-to-Heart Hospice or St. Joseph Catholic School.
