Joshua W. Zurcher

Joshua W. Zurcher, 90, of Monroe passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Lutheran Hospital. He was born on May 17, 1927 in Adams County to William and Eva (Stauffer) Zurcher. He was married on June 14, 1952 to Betty Lou Harvey.

He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 25 years to three and four year olds. He worked in the cutting department at Berne Furniture, retiring in 1992 after 45 years of service. He was a 1947 graduate of Monroe High School. He also helped his brother Paul for around 40 years at Zurcher Tire on the weekends.

He and his wife moved to Westville and worked at a hospital for a couple of years during the Korean War. Upon returning to Monroe in 1954, he spent several years farming and then they moved to town in 1960. He was a kind and gentle soul and placed his faith in God and showed his family unconditional love. He was also an avid Chicago White Sox baseball fan.

He is survived by his wife of Monroe; three sons, Carey D. Zurcher of Monroe; Farrel L. (Sarah) Zurcher of Decatur; and Tracy L. (Kristi) Zurcher of Berne; daughter, Janet L. (Ron) Frauhiger of Decatur; sister, Gladys Nussbaum of Berne; and three grandchildren, Reid, Chloe, and Mallory Zurcher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Arthur, Dale, Vernon, and Paul Zurcher; and a sister, Naomi Macy.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 25 at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral service on Monday, February 26 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Chris Gadlage and Pastor Ernie Suman. Burial will be at Decatur Cemetery.
