Martha J. Sommer

Martha J. Sommer, 94, of Berne passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Swiss Village in Berne, where she was a resident. She was born on September 1, 1921 in Adams County to Albert and Gertrude (North) Zimmerman. She was married on April 13, 1940 to Rufus P. Sommer.

She was a faithful member of the Cross Community Church in Berne. She was a former employee of CTS Corp for over 20 years and a Mary Kay consultant for 14 years. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling. She especially cherished spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Sommer; and Janice (Ernie) Steiner, both of Berne; daughter-in-law, Pam Sommer of Yorktown; three grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) Chrisman of Berne; Adam Steiner of Glasgow, Kentucky; and Sada Sommer of Muncie; seven great-grandchildren, Emily (Brent) Michael; Erika (Carson) Tumbleson; Elizabeth, Adam, Anna, and Audra Chrisman; and Mason Michael Cline; and one great-great-grandchild, Silas Jeffery Michael.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Mike Sommer; four sisters, Ruth Uptgraft; Edna Guyot; Ruby Richey; and Emma Grille; four brothers; Glen Dale, Kenneth, Irvin and Orley Zimmerman; step-mother, Lillian Zimmerman; and step-brother, Harold Guyot.

Visitation will be three hours prior to the 2:00 p.m. funeral service on Saturday, August 20 at the Swiss Village Chapel in Berne. Officiating will be Pastor Chris Kruchkow. Burial will be at Backesto Cemetery in rural Berne.
